I view this painting as a cautionary tale.  It was inspired by a recurring subject in art history, especially during the Renaissance and Baroque period, “Judith & Holofernes”.   If you don’t know this tale, Judith, a queen, beheaded Holofernes, the captain of the army that was about to attack her people.  She seduced him, then beheaded him.

Depending on the gender of the artists who have depicted this tale, they either emphasize the seduction or the beheading.  Female artists tend to focus on Judith’s strength to undertake such a gruesome act.  Male artists usually depict the seduction.  I saw this variation as almost an artistic dialogue on the subject of gender.  I’ve felt the imbalance of power as a woman.  I’ve been angry about gender inequality in my culture.  This painting brooches that subject.

Moreover, I thought about what makes someone do such violence, even if it seems to be done for the greater good.  I believe it starts young.  Most of our beliefs and attitudes are set during that impressionable time.  In childhood, if violence is tolerated, it becomes familiar and a way of life.  When you don’t see it or recognize it anymore with your conscious mind,  it’s a limiting beliefs.   You’re stuck in a vicious cycle of pain and violence.
